1950s Vintage Black Sequin & Chiffon Strapless Party Cocktail Wiggle Dress - Xs to Sm

$189.00

STUNNING! The best dress award should obviously go to you when wearing this bombshell cocktail dress. This beauty is almost a fully sequined dress, but with a lovely added panel of chiffon in the back that gives it that extra little touch of elegance and flare! The dress zips up the back with a metal zipper and features a little chiffon tie in the back. There are no straps, only internal threads to hang the piece up. No labels or tags found but given style and the way its made, its likely from the mid to late 50s. There is no boning inside the garment to keep it up on its own - just FYI. It would likely best fit between a modern Extra Small and Small, but please see measurements. Model is modern size 4-6 for reference and it seemed to fit ok, but was tight in hip/butt area for her.

Free Shipping!

Measurements :

  • Bust: 32 inches from flat measurements as seen in photos; but when trying to account for cup size it was about 34 inches - model is a 34b and it seemed to fit ok.

  • Waist: 25 inches; 26 if pulled taught

  • Hips: 36 inches and was a tad tight here on model, definitely fulfilling the name “wiggle dress” (which I think is honestly how its supposed to fit!)

  • Length: about 38 inches for sequin portion (from top of bust down - remember there are no shoulders to measure from!). The chiffon in back is a bit longer - intentionally.

Good Vintage Condition- Some overall expected wear to the dress but it presents beautifully overall. There are a few small areas throughout the piece with loose threads, some that show and/or suggest some prior sequin loss. I have tried to reinforce the areas I found, but please know that with vintage items continuous sequin loss is a high probability at some point - either sooner or later. Additionally some sequins are bent or malformed and some show discoloration and markings on them that did not lift with dry cleaning (I suppose thats to be expected). The fabric layer underneath the sequins shows some slight discoloration and wear as well if you look closely. Small loose thread/pull found right near zipper. To the chiffon panel, there are some areas of marks that did not lift with dry cleaning. The chiffon panel in back also exhibits some overall wear, loose threads and a small hole was found. There is also some wear to the internal lining as well. The most notable is that it looks to have been altered - here too there are a few of the seams showing they have been cut into, in order to make them lay better inside the dress. There is evidence of stitching inside near the bust, suggesting it may have once been a halter top - but if there were straps at one point, they have since been removed. You could always add something though later on!

NOTE : I just want to note that I personally would advise wearing any sequined piece of this age with some degree of care. I have one very similar to this in my own personal collection and after every wear I take a good look at it to make sure I can address any sequin loss. Usually its fine, but I think in the log run keeping an eye out and addressing repairs quickly - because it will need them at some point- and moving and especially sitting carefully in pieces like this keeps them looking their best for years to come!!

All measurements are approximate as they are taken flat - for garments specifically this means where applicable (bust, waist, hips) has been doubled unless stated otherwise. If you are uncertain about fit and/or need more measurements please ask! If it is provided in the listing, models and/or dress form sizes are used as a point of reference only. Please remember that all bodies are different so always defer to the measurements I provide and check them against your own, preferably on a similar style garment. If you need more information about my measurements and vintage sizing please refer to my FAQs section under my Shop Policies page and ask me, I am here to help!!

Summaries about an item's condition are stated above and should be used in conjunction with the images provided. BUT for more information about what different vintage condition categories mean and what to expect generally, please refer to the FAQs section under my Shop Policies page and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have further questions.
