RARE 1940s Vintage Novelty Roller Skater Print Cream or Off White Roller Skating Mini Costume Dress - Md

$165.00

Wow! An absolutely stunning and unique little mini roller skater dress- I found it within a collection of 1940s roller skating costumes!!! The creamy or off white mini dress features a lovely print consisting of roller skating dancers. The full circle skirt is just the right touch to achieve the perfect twirl while skating! It was originally intended to be worn with cute ruffled shorts underneath - unfortunately the shorts that came with it were in awful shape and will not be sold with the piece. This dress appears to be handmade. There are no labels, but it does have a metal Talon zipper up the back of the skirt and pink buttons continue the closure up the back. Fabric feels like a possibly rayon-nylon blend and has an ever so slight sheen to it when examined closely. I would like to say that I am not 100% certain of this fabric, it is soft and feels nice to the touch, but this is one fabric NO ONE has ever been able to tell me what it is - I have now 3 pieces with this fabric and I have only EVER seen it in 1940s garments and always in this off white color. Skirt portion is lined. Would likely best fit a modern Medium. For reference model is modern size 4/6 and it felt a bit loose.

Measurements :

  • Bust: 39 inches

  • Waist: 28 inches

  • Hips: open given the style of the garment

  • Length: 28 inches from back of neck, down

  • Sleeve Length: capped

FAIR vintage condition - While the garment does present beautifully, there is some overall wear to the piece and its likely best for costume, study, or museum. The biggest issue is to the side of the garment. There is a large area where the fabric is both severely yellowed as well as textured oddly (suggesting some sort of possibly fraying). Here its also very obvious that repairs have been made to attempt to mitigate further damage and rips to the fabric - though it seems to be a bit worn still at the top portion (pictured). That said I believe that the best course of action would be to possibly take it in at this LARGE repair enough so you have none damaged fabric acting as a new seam. It is located at the side of the dress, so I don’t think it would be too terribly obvious that a seam was added, especially if you do it to both sides so its symmetrical. I would have done this myself, except I believe it best to do it with the next owners measurements in mind (obviously it will need to be smaller than current dress measurements). You may also come up with a better way to repair this garment than the aforementioned idea. Whatever you do, I would make sure to do some major rework before one considers wearing it!! Beyond this blatant flaw, there are further marks, discoloration, and stains inside and outside the piece that did not come out or even lighten with cleaning. Some wear to the inner seam allotments and a few loose thread around the buttons/button holes - but these things do not seem to impact wear at all. Some pin holes and wear spots to the piece too. The band around the waist looks to be hand stitched on, possibly as an after thought as if you look in the back, it looks to be stitched and folded oddly - though once everything is fastened, it seems to lay ok. Some wear to the color of the printed skaters. Priced accordingly for its novelty, but also for the severe flaws. I would say it MIGHT be wearable as is for a SHORT period of time, but I still highly recommend doing serious modifications FIRST! The pink buttons were added by myself as the original buttons were missing when the garment was found. Fabric does like to wrinkle, so hang it up as soon as you receive the garment! SOLD AS IS.

All measurements are approximate as they are taken flat - for garments specifically this means where applicable (bust, waist, hips) has been doubled unless stated otherwise. If you are uncertain about fit and/or need more measurements please ask! If it is provided in the listing, models and/or dress form sizes are used as a point of reference only. Please remember that all bodies are different so always defer to the measurements I provide and check them against your own, preferably on a similar style garment.
